Quick Overview of the Medifast Diet
You may be seriously contemplating Medifast as your next diet plan. Our site content likely makes it clear we support you in this decision. But because we do not work for Medifast, we also understand that sometimes cutting through the hype and marketing fast talk is what you really need in order to make an informed decision about your own health. Here is our own completely unbiased take on how you can make Medifast work for you, without celebrity endorsements or fancy catchphrases.
Exactly how does the Medifast plan work?
- - You should never be hungry, because you will be eating six times each day
- - You can expect to lose anywhere from eight to 20 pounds each month, or two to five pounds each week, according to a variety of individual factors
- - Five of each of your six meals are provided to you by Medifast
- - The average American daily expenditure on food is $16. Medifast meals will cost you around $11-$16 daily, depending upon the plan you select
- - The Medifast prepared meals are portable and require limited preparation work, which leaves you with no excuses when traveling, working, or vacationing
In the simplest possible terms, Medifast is a plan that replaces your normal meals. The concept behind this type of program is to carefully monitor and control your caloric and nutritional intake with the help of Medifast’s guidance and prepared meals. Medifast has already done all the math for you, so you will never need to worry about counting calories or fat grams, and can simply concentrate on living your life. You will eat a prepared meal twice a day, along with prepared snacks (including treats like cheese puffs). Once a day, you will enjoy a “lean and green” meal you prepare yourself.
What About Existing Dietary Issues?
Medifast offers plans geared specifically to the needs of diabetics. In addition, Medifast has created programs friendly to a large number of dietary restrictions, from vegetarian and Kosher certified to lactose free, gluten free, and peanut or shellfish free for those with allergies. Whatever dietary restriction you may have, Medifast has very likely already addressed it with an appropriate plan to meet your needs.
What Kinds Of Meals Do I Eat?
Every day, five of your six meals will come from Medifast’s prepared foods. It could hardly be any easier to manage and maintain. Within these five meals, you can select whatever you would like from Medifast’s menu, even eating the same thing five times if that is what you want. Meal choices are these:
- - Shakes (great source of chocolate!)
- - Bars (similar to Power Bars or other nutritional breakfast bars)
- - Pudding (dessert again)
- - Chili and soups
- - Drinks (easy for busy times or traveling)
- - Eggs, scrambled
- - Snacks (cheese puffs and pretzels)
All you do is select any five from that list and eat them each day. No counting, no fuss, no muss. All the math has been done for you, and your nutritional needs will be met.
It Isn’t All Prepared Food, Though
Your sixth meal each day will be your “Lean and Green” meal. You will have to purchase or prepare this meal yourself, following general guidelines. Essentially, your sixth meal will include about seven ounces of lean protein like turkey or fish along with non-starch vegetables. No buttery corn on the cob or baked potatoes drowning in sour cream and bacon bits, but healthy veggies like lettuces, peppers, or asparagus. You can prepare this meal at home or even head to a restaurant or get some takeout without blowing your entire day’s diet. Avoid starchy vegetables and beef and you’re perfectly within the guidelines. You could even have a buffalo steak!
Because the monotony of a limited selection of prepared foods can eventually drive some people away, Medifast added the “Lean and Green” meal as a way to add variety to the program and help people stick with it for as long as they need to in order to lose the weight they want to. Other diets might restrict your ability to eat out and socialize with friends, but Medifast has built-in flexibility to keep you motivated.
What Does A Regular Medifast Day Look Like?
- - 7:00 a.m. Scrambled eggs for breakfast
- - 10:30 a.m. Oatmeal raisin bar for snack
- - 12:30 p.m. Medifast’s chili for lunch
- - 4:00 p.m. Chocolate shake for mid-afternoon treat
- - Lean and Green meal, seven ounces of tuna with asparagus on the side
- - 10:00 p.m. Pretzel snack while winding down before bed.
